A HUGE ADRENALINE RUSH HUNT
A Brown Bear has been on my “bucket list” for many years. After thoroughly researching several outfitters from different areas, I selected HANS BAERTLE’S Southeast Alaska Guiding for my hunt of a lifetime. I could not have made a better decision.
Hans has been guiding Brown bear hunts for over 40 years; and along with his wife Nataliia runs a first class operation. They have it all; experience, first class meals and accommodations and above all make you feel like one of the family.
The actual hunt only took a day but it was a huge adrenaline rush!!! Hans spotted bears on the beach at the mouth of a salmon stream and we nosed the skiff over to a small rock offshore about a quarter mile. After careful observation through the spotting scope Hans declared “The one bear is a good one “ so we motored to the beach to start what became the most exciting stalk I have undertaken in my hunting career. By the time we had to worked our way to the mouth of the creek, our big guy had vanished into the forest. We then headed inland to the first bend in the creek where two bears were spotted fishing about 75 yards away but neither was our bear. Circling back to the beach we set up on the edge of the trees to wait and watch and already had 3 bears within 40 yards of us. A sow wandered to within 15 yards of us and Hans was about to “wave her off” when our bear came crashing through the trees and thundered onto the beach just 25 yards from our position. Needless to say my heart was pumping overtime as bears scattered in all directions. My bear was quartering away when Hans said “Take him” so I fired my 375 and he dropped where he stood. It was unbelievable. I was all smiles as I realized the fulfillment of a lifelong dream lay before me in the form of a giant Alaskan Brown Bear. It sported a beautiful hide that squared a little over 9 feet.
Hans knows his bears and although I was a little apprehensive at first about being in such close quarters with these huge bruins, it took no time at all with Hans to feel very comfortable among them in the woods. He knows what he is doing and when he said “That’s the one “ I knew it would be a bear that would more than fill my expectations. A few days later my hunting partner also took a massive bear which was the proverbial “icing on the cake”. We will both be grinning from ear to ear for a long time.
